accelerateSC is South Carolina’s one-stop-shop website to help citizens connect to important information during these changing times.

Face Coverings

Various cities in South Carolina have distributed free face masks to those who need them. Check your local newspapers, television, and internet resources to see when various groups may be distributing face coverings.

Request a free face covering from DHVANI. You will have to provide your email address, name, mailing address, and answer two questions. Answers to the questions do not affect whether you receive a free mask.

COVID-19 Symptoms

COVID-19 symptoms may include:

  • Fever of 100.4° F or greater

Freedom Scientific is offering a version of JAWS or Zoom free for people working from home or in school (until 8/31/2020).

YesAccessible!, who provides educational software for the blind, is offering TypeAbility, a typing and computer tutor program, for $30 (regular price is $150) when using it with a JAWS/Fusion free Home License. Both JAWS/Fusion and TypeAbility will expire on August 31st, 2020.

Resources for students and educators

Discus - Tutor.com is available to provide South Carolina schools and public libraries with homework help now through September 20, 2020. The resource is also linked from the Discus A-Z List and By Grade Level pages at www.scdiscus.org. Users have access to drop-in live tutoring 7 days a week from 8:00 am - 10:00 pm. Features include Live Homework Help, WriteTutor Center, TestPrep Center and a Skills Center. A user account is required for some of the features. This resource subscription has been temporarily added due to the recent school closings related to the COVID-19 virus.

Aira - As many universities and colleges are rapidly shifting to distance learning, some materials and software being used are inaccessible. Aira Tech Corp is now offering free Aira for any college student for the remainder of the spring semester ending in May 2020. If you know of a student who could benefit from Aira for their distance learning, please email support@aira.io for more information on the program.

National Federation of the Blind

NFB to Make Transportation Available to Blind Americans for Essential Services through Lyft during COVID-19. Blind Americans will receive Lyft Ride Credits to buy essentials and more. Read the press release for more information

NFB-NEWSLINE - The National Federation of the Blind is providing up-to-date information to all eligible subscribers of the NFB-NEWSLINE service. The information can be fournd in the Breaking News Online category, and will also be available for those few states that are currently not sponsored for the next sixty days starting Monday, March 16th.

Access COVID-19 information using the telephone by pressing 5 from the main menu, then press 1 for the Breaking News Online category, followed by pressing the 1 key which will bring you to the COVID-19 information. If using the NFB-NEWSLINE Mobile IOS app, look for COVID-19 information under the "All Publications" section. The content can be accessed with Braille devices such as note-takers and refreshable Braille displays.
